How the estimate is calculated
Room area is length times width.
The order adds the waste percent. Boxes are that order divided by square feet per box, rounded up.
Order quantity
Square feet to order = length × width × (1 + waste). Boxes = that amount ÷ box coverage, rounded up.
Example
- Measure the room in feet.
- Start with 10% waste for a straight layout.
- Replace 20 square feet per box with the number on the product.

What changes the result
Layout
Diagonal installs and lots of doorways need more waste than a simple rectangle.
Matching dye lots
Buying short and going back later can mean a visible mismatch. Rounding up helps.
Stairs
Stair treads are not included in the room rectangle.

How much waste should I add?
Ten percent is a common straight-lay allowance. Difficult layouts often use more.
What if I already know the square feet?
Enter a length and width that multiply to that area, such as the square root is unnecessary: use the area as length and 1 as width.
Does this include underlayment?
No. Order underlayment from the net room area unless the product says otherwise.
