How the estimate is calculated
Each tile covers its face plus one grout joint on the length and the width.
The count is the room area plus waste, divided by that coverage, rounded up.
Tile count
Tiles = ceiling of (room area × (1 + waste) ÷ (((tile length + grout) × (tile width + grout)) ÷ 144)).
Example
- Measure the area in feet.
- Enter the tile size in inches from the box.
- Use 10% waste, or 15% if you will set the tile on a diagonal.

What changes the result
Cuts
A centered layout with many cuts needs more tiles than the waste default.
Grout
A wider joint means slightly fewer tiles. It does not estimate bags of grout.
Walls versus floors
Use the area you are tiling. For a wall, length can be the wall width and width can be the height.
Questions
Does this include baseboard or trim tile?
No. Add those pieces separately.
What grout size should I use?
An eighth of an inch is the default. Use the joint you plan to install.
Why buy extra?
Cuts, breakage, and a future repair are why the count rounds up after waste.
